The Minho region, in the northwest of Portugal, is named after the River Minho that forms the northern border with Spain. It is west of Trás-os-Montes and is located in a region of incredible green landscapes, mountains, picturesque valleys, rivers and the dramatic Atlantic coast. This region is also famous for its gastronomic richness and friendly and hospitable people (which is why Portugal is also known and so appreciated).

Minho has a strong Celtic influence and shares many cultural traits with neighboring Galicia, in northwest Spain. It is also known for Caldo Verde and Vinho Verde. The region was part of the Roman and once German province of the Kingdom of Gallaecia (Galicia). There are historical traces of Celtic influence in Minho that include Fortes Briteiros from the Iron Age, the oldest native people in Galicia who inhabited the regions of Entre Douro and Minho, in the North of Portugal.

The main cities in Minho are Braga (ecclesiastical center in Portugal) and Guimarães (the first Portuguese capital and cradle city of the country’s history, in addition, it is also the land where my mother was born). Guimarães was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. This city is capable of making us travel back in time thanks to its Gothic architecture, medieval castle, royal palaces, stately homes, monasteries, churches among other historic buildings that are key to the birth of the country; hence it is one of our favorite cities.

In addition to these, Viana do Castelo also stands out, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean where it is possible to visit fishing villages and taste some of the best delicacies from the sea. In 2009, the city was considered the “Mecca of European Architecture”.

Barcelos is known for its famous open-air Fair (Barcelos), where a demonstration of the agriculture and crafts produced is presented every Thursday; and by the mythical Rooster of Barcelos. Valença do Minho shares a border with Spain and there you can see the 17th century walls, used to protect the country from invasions from the North.

The Peneda-Gerês National Park is a protected area and the only National Park in the country. Its area covers part of Minho and Trás-os-Montes.

It is in Minho that you will find true peace of mind, among the centuries-old pine trees and oaks, wild fauna with wild boars, mountain goats and horses, and the rivers and streams that refresh the surrounding atmosphere and invite you to swim.

Furthermore, Minho is still a very devout region, in which religion plays an extremely important role, proof of this are the

huge monuments and cathedrals in the middle of forested areas, ancient monasteries full of tradition, fantastic stories and mysticism that contrast with the little chapels where there is always a candle lit watching over someone. Here you will find some of the most unique and special routes to Santiago de Compostela.

Braga is probably one of the most religious places in the country, abundant in ancient churches, monasteries and an impressive cathedral, reflecting Portugal’s Catholic roots.
